FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A New Federal Law, The Child Medication Safety Act (H.R. 1170) Would Prohibit Schools From Coercing Parents to Drug their Children.

Who Could Oppose That?

The fact that a group called "Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder" (CHADD) has rallied their troops to oppose a new federal bill called the "Child Medication Safety Act 2003" should come as no surprise to anyone who is familiar with this organization.   The bill, H.R. 1170, simply states that parents should not be coerced into drugging their children.   One must wonder how an organization claiming to work with parents, could ever disagree and oppose a measure which has been enacted to protect children from coerced psychiatric drugging.   Perhaps the reason is that CHADD is funded by the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture the very drugs that parents are being forced to drug their children with.

In response to the new federal law, CHADD has claimed that only a "handful" of highly publicized and isolated events of such coercion have occurred.  Surely CHADD must be aware that the issue is such a national concern, that already 4 states have had to pass laws to curb this abusive and one would think unconstitutional practice (Connecticut, Illinois, Minnesota and Virginia).  And this year, 15 more states have introduced similar laws including Arizona, Hawaii, Texas, Alaska, Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, Michigan, Texas and West Virginia. So much for CHADD's theory.   What does CHADD think?  That legislators across the nation went to all the trouble to enact laws simply based on a few parents' horror stories?

If one cares to look deep enough, there are some issues about CHADD that could explain their motivation.  For example,  in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA)1995 report on Methylphenidate (Ritalin), it pointed out the conflict of interest between CHADD and Ritalin's manufacturer, Ciba Geigy (now Novartis), stating: "It has recently come to the attention of the DEA, that Ciba-Geigy contributed $748,000 to CHADD from 1991 to 1994.  The DEA has concerns that the depth of the financial relationship with the manufacturer was not well-known by the public..."

Today, CHADD continues to receive money from the drug companies and promotes drug solutions for what could easily be educational problems.

Even more to the point at hand, the same report states,  "Of particular concern is that most of the ADHD literature prepared for the public consumption by CHADD and other groups and available to parents, does not address the abuse potential or actual abuse of methylphenidate.  Instead, methylphenidate (usually referred to as Ritalin by these groups) is routinely portrayed as a benign, mild substance that is not associated with abuse or serious side effects.  In reality however, there is an abundance of scientific literature which indicates that methylphenidate shares the same abuse potential as other Schedule II stimulants."

The only issue that any organization should be concerned with is a parent’s right to choose, and a parents' right to informed consent in order to make the wisest decision about their child's health and educational needs.  CHADD and pro mental health groups do not supply this much needed information to parents--not about the subjectivity of the disorder (ADHD which has no scientific evidence to validate it as a physical abnormality) or about the dangers of the drugs being forced onto millions of our children.   It is hard to imagine any organization claiming to have the interest of parents and children's rights, expressing opposition over this issue.  After all, H.R. 1170 would ultimately strengthen parental rights and protect children from being forced to take cocaine like drugs as a condition of attending public school.

The basic truth is that not one of these mental health coalition members that oppose H.R. 1170 took any pro-active action at the state level to curb the massive problem that is occurring.  In fact, parents helped initiate each state law, stemming from the abuses that some of CHADD's coalition member groups should have prevented. In addition, at each state hearing these same coalition members opposed the actions.

Teachers are not instruments to promote mental health research.  Teachers function to recognize learning styles and provide appropriate instructions based on each child’s basic educational need. The mental health coalition’s position that teachers are a vital part in providing observations to the diagnosing professionals cannot be more dangerous.  This approach has been a complete failure.  Effective language based approaches to behavior is the only part in which the teacher's role exists.  After all, communication directly affects behavior.

There should be no underestimating that the United States is facing a huge issue when it comes to the use of amphetamines and Methylphenidate on school age children.  This practice is stemming from somewhere.  The evidence points directly to the commingling of mental health and education.  CHADD and the mental health coalition members have a direct interest in the labels and drug treatment they promote.  It is not surprising that they object to H.R. 1170; after all, their livelihood is at stake.

CHADD CONCERNED THAT U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HEARING FEATURES
MULTIPLE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY AFFILIATE SPOKESPERSONS

Landover, MD - On Thursday, September 26, the House Committee on
Government Reform, chaired by Representative Dan Burton (R-IN), will
conduct a hearing entitled "Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders -
Are Children Being Over Medicated?"

Four of the five witnesses -- invited by Representative Burton -- are
reported to be spokespersons for or persons associated with the Citizens
Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), an affiliate established 1969 by the
Church of Scientology. CHADD is concerned that four witnesses associated
with the hearing share the belief that AD/HD is a lie and a fraud. They
include:
* Lisa Marie Pressley
* Bruce Wiseman
* Dr. Mary Ann Block
* Patricia Weathers

Patricia Weather's response to CHADD's Ground breaking News!

I had anticipated this reaction from CHADD.  It doesn't bother me.  It would have been out of character for them to validate a statement before marketing it.   God knows that they regularly market ADHD as an "neurobiological condition" and yet have failed to validate it as such.

I was invited by Dan Burton's office to testify and I did just that.  I testified on behalf of my son Michael, my family, and for all the other families and children out there that have been railroaded into drugging their children based on incorrect and false information provided to them.

 I have had the great pleasure of working firsthand with all variety of people, parents, and groups, from all walks of life, and all socio-economic and religious backgrounds.   The Citizens Commission On Human Rights (CCHR) is one such group.  This dynamic organization is a forerunner on this issue and their representatives are wonderful people, out to make a difference.

My experience with this issue has led me to conclude that CHADD/APA/Pro-drug side seems to always scream that the Scientologists are the only ones having the problems with the drugging of children.  In my opinion, they do this because they want to divert the issue away from the reality-----they are drugging children without a scientifically proven disease, and they are doing this for profit!   They can only complain about WHO is speaking out because they cannot defend themselves against the fact that they are promoting drugs, that they are funded by drug companies, and that they are well aware that no scientific evidence exists to support ADHD as a "brain disorder".  All they can do is try and make enough noise to detract from the issue. Believe me, they want this to happen!  They want us to be overlooked.  It is much easier to shrug off and or discredit one class of people rather than take on the issue and face the fact that a whole vast mass of different classes are opposed to the wholesale drugging of kids.

I, for one, being a Christian, do not condemn people for believing in what they want to believe in.  I welcome diversity and feel that all people, of all races, backgrounds, and religious beliefs should work together to fight this outrage.  We all should be angry and concerned.  One specific group will never win the war against the drugging of children. It will take many different groups to make positive reform happen.

 My philosophy is that if you are against the drugging of children and a supporter of full informed consent rights for parents, then you are on my side 100%!!!!!!  I do not have time to dwell on what religious beliefs you espouse to follow.

Whether one agrees with my views or not is a matter of choice.  I, myself, will not fall prey to the people out there pointing fingers at others who have truly made a difference in regards to this issue.

Dear Winnie,

It was a pleasure to speak with you regarding your press release.  I am very concerned that you would attack people who oppose your point of view based on their religion.  We would be happy to provide CHADD with information regarding the misdiagnose of hundreds of children with the subjective label of "ADHD" and the growing number of deaths associated with the drugs promoted as "treatment" for this subjective label of "ADHD".

We recognize in a free society everyone has the right to petition their government regardless of their religious, political, or social background.  We respect this right.  We ask that CHADD refrain from attacking religions in your press releases and understand the fundamental right to freedom of religion in the United States of America.  Our parents come from all religious, political, and social backgrounds.  We can't image that CHADD would expect us all to list our religious backgrounds and defend our relationship with people based on their religious beliefs.  Again ABLECHILD.org believes in the freedom of religion and respects religious freedom.

We, therefore, ask CHADD to refrain from attacking religions.  We are proud to work along side the NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION: Citizens Commission on Human Rights as we are also proud to work with all those opposed to the drugging of innocent children based on a subjective checklist.  This issue crosses all political, religious, and social backgrounds.

We ask that CHADD remove this press release based on the accuracy of it as well as the basic rights of religious freedom in the United States.

Best regards,

Sheila Matthews
