Keeping the momentum flowing!

The summer ended with a bang for ABLECHILD: Parents for Label and Drug Free Education!!!!  Fall success is underway!!!

AbleChild Vice President/Pennsylvania, Mrs. Vicky Dunkle and her husband Steve traveled to Washington in September with a strong message to the Senate to support S.1390 “The Child Medication Safety Act of 2003”.   The Dunkle’s had many meetings with Senators and Aides to inform them of the tragedy that can result from schools pressuring parents to drug their children, and the importance of enacting safeguards like S.1390 to curb this national crisis.  Their 10-year-old daughter, Shaina, tragically died as a result of toxic levels of a psychiatric drug prescribed her.  The Dunkle’s experienced pressure by their daughter’s school to get a diagnosis of ADHD and “medication”.

“The fact that school personnel can coerce parents into administering these dangerous drugs to children has got to stop.  Schools are supposed to be the place that we, as parents, feel our children will be safe from harm.  Our daughter’s death has not only left us to deal with the guilt of believing in the so-called professional system, but anger that we were not warned properly about the subjective label and the risks of the ‘treatment’ associated with it.”   -Mrs. Vicky Dunkle

The Dunkle’s trip to Washington was featured in Pennsylvania’s Olean Times Herald on September 26, 2003.  To read about this courageous family speaking out on behalf of all our children click here http://www.ablechild.org/newsarchive/dunkles_

AbleChild Vice President/Georgia, Mr. Tony Zizza continued delivering many more hard hitting wins for parents by informing the public on this issue.

AbleChild was in attendance at Connecticut’s State Education Conference “Inclusive Education Promising Practices” on Saturday October 25th, 2003, sharing important information with educators as well as the public.  Some of this information included  “The Child Medication Safety Act”, “Informed Consent”, and “The Right to Refuse psychological-based services in schools”.   AbleChild’s President Ms. Patricia Weathers and National Vice President Ms. Sheila Matthews had a tremendously successful day, informing many who were unaware of this national controversy and ultimate crisis occurring within our educational system.

“One of AbleChild’s goals is to ‘educated the educators’ to the real facts behind labeling and drugging children. Most educators have been exposed to only one-side of this issue, many being taught that labeling and “medicating” children is a solid answer for behavioral or attentional problems.  Many of these people within the education system have been told that these “medications” are mild substances, completely unaware of the very real risks and dangers that these drugs can have on a child. This is part of the problem.  As an organization we are there to open their eyes to the reality of the situation.”   -Ms. Patricia Weathers

AbleChild wants everyone to know that together we can make a difference! We encourage parents to check out the growing number of signatures on our coercion/pressuring petition located on our site!!!!!  The Senate is watching this list.

We also encourage all of you to continue:

  •      Directing others to our site!

  •      Calling, writing and faxing your Federal Senators and asking them to sign on to S. 1390 “The Child Medication Safety Act”, to safeguard your parental rights as well as your children’s.

  •      Contacting the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Members (where the bill is still sitting) and asking each member to stand up for your parental right to “choose” and sign on and support S. 1390!  To see and contact all these committee members click on the link listed for your convenience.http://labor.senate.gov     /committee_members.html

  •      Speaking out!  All parents who want to speak out on this issue and share their personal experiences need to contact us at ablechild@optonline.net.

  •      Sending us documentation that you have (Example: letters from your child’s school) that will ensure that this bill moves out of the committee it is sitting in.  This documentation will further back us up against the many “groups” claiming our stories are “not real” or “overblown”.  Documentation can be sent to AbleChild President, Patricia Weathers at P.O. Box 1084, Millbrook, New York 12545.

We wish to thank all of you that have submitted documentation and encourage all others to not wait but act now…..this bill needs to move!
